WELCOME!!
And....here she is again! OWREN Director Colleen Gignac with that big smile on her face welcoming you to the Conference. But wait, what if that's not Colleen and just a cardboard cut out of her that we use to fool you? The only way to find out if she's the real thing is to show up and check it out yourself! If you weren't there, you missed this fantastic OWREN Brown Bag Draw (like a penny sale) and Silent Auction. The tables were loaded with items to drool for! Our sincere thanks to Carol Clarke and Debbie Dumelie-Beacon for organizing this and working so hard on it. They did the best-ever job! OWREN's table display. We're on the lookout for donations of professional display panels - if anyone has any, please contact us! Liz Springall (right) and the winner of the OWREN Conference Scholarship, Julie Kee from the Wye Marsh Centre in Midland. Two scholarships were availalble this year to first time Conference and Basic Skills attendees. Most conference attendee's hotel rooms don't look like this but OWREN Directors use their rooms for storing supplies and are always working on last minute things for the conference. Finding one's bed at night is sometimes next to impossible as Director Linda Laurus can attest! However, if she keeps drinking that coffee she won't need any sleep! Delbert Miller, MNR Senior Fish and Wildlife Technical Specialist, Alymer District, gave a presentation on legislation pertaining to Wildlife Control Operators. If you missed this informative session, there's always next year! Christy MacDonald, Senior Fish and Wildlife Technical Specialist with the Ministry of Natural Resources, Parry Sound District, presented on Nuisance Bear Conflict Resolution. She gave numerous handouts and safety tips for learning to live with bears. Dr. Erica Miller, DVM, gave excellent and informative presentations even though she arrived from Delaware, with a bad case of laryngitis and could barely talk above a whisper. Dr. Doug Campbell, Ontario Veterinary College at the Univ. of Guelph, Staff Pathologist-CCWHC (Canadian Cooperative Wildlife Health Centre) presented on Type E Botulism and other causes of mortality in common Loons in Ontario. As always, he brings us up to date information for Ontario rehabilitators in his presentations. An example of some of the latest statisical information you missed if you weren't at Dr. Doug Campbell's presentation. Dr. Ian Barker, Professor, Ontario Veterinary College, U of Guelph and Regional Director of the CCWHC (Canadian Cooperative Wildlife Health Centre) gave an excellent presentation on Emerging Infectious Diseases in Ontario wildlife. Dr. Ian Barker, Regional Director of the CCWHC (Canadian Cooperative Wildlife Health Centre) answering questions from the audience during his presentation. Kerry Hackett presented on The Importance of Nutrition in Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation. Kip Parker, Wildlife Director, Earth Rangers Wildlife Hospital and Rehabilitation Centre, shared his extensive knowledge on administrative issues and volunteer management with conference participants. Mark Ryckman, Ministry of Natural Resources, Rabies Research and Development Unit, gave an update on the follow-up of the first ever radio collared raccoon tracking study underway in the province which includes a small sampling of radio collared rehabilitated raccoons. Lisa Fosco, Director of Animal Care, Ohio Wildlife Centre gave great presentations on Avian Physical Therapy and Diagnosis of Avian Lead Poisoning. Lynn Miller, Le Nichoir, Quebec, was a featured speaker who shared her extensive knowledge of Avian subject matter with us all. She's so likeable we wanted to keep her here in Ontario for good! Peter Nolan, VP, AAA Wildlife Control, shared his extensive knowledge on what's involved in wildlife proofing and wildlife conflict resolution. This is the kind of information rehabilitators need to encourage the public to give the natural mothers of these species every possible chance to reclaim their offspring and not have them brought into rehabilitation centres needlessly. Last chance to purchase tickets on the Brown Bag Draw and put your bids on the Silent Auction Items came in the hour before the presentations began. There was something for everyone! Here's Mike checking his bids in the Silent Auction. The all you can eat buffet dinner was a mouth-watering feast, no matter what your dietary preferences were. We guarantee people fell off their diets at these tables! See these folks? Shh, don't tell anyone, but this is their third time up to the buffet tables for food! No one can say they went hungry that evening. OWREN's banquet dinners are well known for their menu selections and quality. It is a once a year treat that every rehabilitator has earned! This year's banquet saw special presentations awarded to OWREN Director and Secretary, Colleen Gignac. Colleen gives 150% of herself to OWREN and to help fulfill our mission. Here she receives a framed print of two raccoons (the kind you don't have to feed!) from OWREN Chair, MC Kuruziak. Another special presentation was awarded to OWREN Director Brian Salt. Brian served as Conference Chair and his tireless work on the details of booking facilities and equipment all these years was acknowledged as he was awarded a framed print of a Bald Eagle by OWREN Chair, MC Kuruziak. "What is that Brian, it's not a raccoon!" Carol Clarke (left) and Debbie Beacon (centre) receive a special gift from the OWREN Board from Chair MC Kuruziak, for the outstanding contribution they made in organizing the Brown Bag Sale and Silent Auction. "No, no Debbie, you have to open that package before you can drink it!!" OWREN's Veterinarian of the Year - 2006 Award was presented to Dr. Tyrrel de Langely to acknowledge his contribution to wildlife rehabilitation and care of native Ontario species. Brian Salt, made the presentation on behalf of the OWREN Board. Dr. de Langley was heard to say "Thank God it's not something kinky!" Dr. Erica Miller, DVM, Tri-State Bird Rescue and Research Foundation, DE, was OWREN's Keynote Banquet speaker. Her subject was Ethics in Wildlife Rehabilitation. On her third day with us, she STILL had laryngitis and in spite of being jolted out of bed wtih the rest of the hotel guests late at night by a fire alarm, she continued to soldier on. This was definitely not a boring conference! Networking at its best!! Sharing good food and even better fellowship during the banquet dinner. This group ate so much that none of them could get out of their chairs! It's a good thing we didn't have any dancing. We'd have needed wheels on the chairs to do that! Two of our guests were from Northern College and had an information booth on the Veterinary Technician Program with a wildlife rehabilitation component. Networking, sharing information, that's what it's about. Another group of conference attendees who are probably having an after dinner discussion on whether Avian massage is at all similar to human massage. Hmm, probably not, birds have wings - humans don't! Here's a happy group holding a show and tell after all the draws were made. We think this table walked off winning most of the prizes. There were some heavy bidders here who diligently kept their eyes on the Silent Auction items. Lynn Miller (centre), Pat Harris (right). Smiling because they won lots and lots of stuff too! And...just because they're having a good time. Liz (left), Linda (centre) both OWREN Directors and Dr. Erica Miller, Keynote Speaker, share a laugh (or maybe it's a secret they have that they don't want us to know about??) Janice Enright, (left) hand in the air, calling out "Waiter, Cheque Please!" Liz, Linda, Dr. Erica Miller, laughing at MC Kuruziak who has yet again messed up the punchline on the joke she was telling. Every time we see OWREN Director, Liz, she's eating again. We are sure she has a hollow leg. Here Dr. Erica Miller (right) is watching her and wondering where she puts all that food. "Didn't you just have three helpings at the all you can eat buffet at the banquet, only an hour ago?" Here they are again, Liz and Dr. Erica Miller, putting a finishing tribute to the OWREN Conference 2006. Cheers to another successful year and we'll see you all in 2007. Just think of the great time you'll miss by not being there. See you then!!
